Whatever the weather –sunshine or snow - here is the Culture staff’s selection of limited-episode series to stream during study breaks or when stuck inside during even more inclement weather.

Alias Grace

This six-episode series is based on a Margaret Atwood novel about the true story of Grace Marks, a housemaid accused and found guilty of murder in Canada in the 1840s. The series is told in a stream-of-consciousness style as Grace discusses her point of view in the story to a psychiatrist while imprisoned. The show is available to stream on Netflix.

Twin Peaks: The Return

The Return is based on the original Twin Peaks series, and picks up where the original series left off, with lead character, FBI agent Dale Cooper left behind in the parallel “Black Lodge” universe. The sequel series is even “trippier” than the original, and features both beloved old characters and fresh new ones. It is available to stream through Showtime.

Roots

Roots, based on the book series of the same name by Alex Haley, tells the story of one African-American family through the generations, from present-day to slavery, all the way back to the days of Kunta Kinte. The reboot premiered in 2016, and features Forest Whitaker and Laurence Fishburne among the star-studded cast. It’s available to stream on Hulu.

Olive Kitteridge

This drama tells the story of a 25-year marriage between a schoolteacher and her husband, and all the intricacies and difficulties of a long-term relationship. Oscar-Award winner Frances McDormand (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri) plays the titular role, for which she received a nomination in 2015. The series was nominated for a Best Limited Series Oscar as well, and is available to stream on Amazon.
