Travel should always be a positive and pleasant experience. However, for those with stressful lifestyles, anxiety, or other health concerns, it can be daunting to leave your comfort zone and explore a foreign place. Here are five tips for managing anxiety while on vacation.

Essential Oils

They come in a variety of scents and with significant benefits. Lavender is known to help calm the mind and senses. Peppermint can be used to help relieve headaches and muscle tension. Just rub a bit on your wrists, between the palms, or on the affected area; inhale and relax. Most essential oils come in tiny vials that conveniently fit right into a travel size liquid bag.

Headphones

These are a must when traveling. Not only can they help drown out the noise of a crying baby on a plane, but they are portable enough to help ground you if you begin to feel anxious or unwell. Load up a calming playlist on your iPhone and have it with you when you need it.

Eye masks

Sleeping in new and different environments can be a difficult adjustment. Eye masks help block out any excess light and add a relaxing pressure to the eyes, all of which is helpful for the anxious mind.

Creativity

Having a creative outlet is a beneficial coping skill. Use writing, drawing, and photography to help ground you and also create souvenirs to take home with you.

Bring Your Medications

If you rely on medications, it is important to bring them with you and continue taking them as needed – be aware of time difference. Keep your medications together and on-hand, making sure to pack them in your carry-on in case of an emergency.
