Behind the QÜINCE name advertised across Allston and Fenway is Quince Young, a 19-year-old junior at Boston University. Born and raised in Monterey, California, Young brings a Bay Area touch to the East Coast. She is currently pursuing a degree in neuroscience at the College of Arts and Sciences. In her sorority, Delta Gamma, she is known as the group’s “resident DJ.” Though at first glance, she may seem to have a so-called “RBF,” in reality, she is a quirky and kind-hearted individual with a prominent sense of humor.

Young’s musical interests started at a young age, as she grew up playing both the piano and guitar. Thanks to years of lessons, Young has a strong foundation in classical music. Understanding the intricacies of classical compositions has given her an ear for harmonies, melodies, and rhythm. Her knowledge of music theory has helped her grasp technical aspects of music production and mixing, resulting in her smooth transitions and stylistic blending. Her classical background has served her well when dealing with house music, as BPM (beats per minute) really matters.

Before playing on stages across Boston, Young started DJing as a casual, fun hobby during her sophomore year of college. After mixing in her apartment with small groups of friends, word quickly spread about her talent. This led to her first official gig DJing at a fraternity party in January 2023. The buzz around her performances continued to grow, and she started landing gigs at various events, such as magazine launch parties. This year, she stepped into the spotlight in Fenway, playing at Fenway Johnnie’s for the first time in September, later at Game On!, and more. The local music scene has taken notice as venues around Boston continue to reach out to book her. Catch QÜINCE at the Off the Cuff launch party downtown on Friday, December 8, 2023!

Q: Can you describe the feeling you get when DJing?

A: It’s like a whirlwind of emotions and energy all rolled into one. I get a sort of rush that surges through me as I step behind the board, and the crowd starts to dance. When I see people dancing and enjoying themselves, it’s an indescribable high. It’s a feeling of pure exhilaration and a sense of purpose that I can’t get enough of, and having my friends by my side makes it so much better.

Q: What factors do you consider or prioritize when curating your set?

A: My main priority is creating a one-of-a-kind experience for the audience. I consider the venue, the event, and the mood I want to set. I also pay attention to the audience’s vibe and energy during the performance so I can adjust the music accordingly. Track selection is huge. I aim for a balance between crowd-pleasers and more experimental sounds to keep things interesting while staying true to my own style. Most of my current crowds enjoy a mix of deep house and pop remixes.

Q: How has the community’s reception of your performances made you feel?

A: It has been absolutely amazing. It’s so validating to see people enjoying my sets and coming back again. Knowing that I’m contributing to the music scene in Boston and connecting with so many people has been such an awesome experience. It has boosted my confidence and motivated me to keep pushing my boundaries and growing my skills. I still get nervous before sets, but the support that my friends and the audience give me makes me feel great.

Q: What are your future goals or plans in terms of DJing?

A: I hope to keep growing, both as an artist and as a part of the music community. I want to continue exploring different genres and pushing my boundaries creatively. Long-term, I would love to produce my own tracks and collaborate with other artists, possibly even releasing an EP or album. My dream is to play at larger venues and get more involved with the Boston and New York City DJ scene. The future is full of possibilities, and I can’t wait to see where this journey takes me.

Q: What drives your love for DJing and performing?

A: DJing and performing are my forms of self-expression. I love the power of music to bring people together, to make them forget their worries, and just dance. The thrill of finding that perfect track, the excitement of mixing live, and the sense of community within the music scene drive my passion. It’s an escape from the stress of college life and a way to connect with people on a deeper level. For me, DJing is more than just a hobby. It’s a part of who I am, and I can’t imagine my life without it.
