Imagine having to get out of your cozy bed and travel through relentless winds in below-freezing temperatures, just to get to your classes?
Slowly, a sense of dread sneaks up on you. You start setting multiple alarms, just to ignore them all, and the next thing you know, the lecture has ended without you.
The winter days are gray, and sunlight is significantly reduced. The sun sets around 4 p.m., leaving behind little light and a starless sky. Amid the winter blues, it’s important to keep a few strategies in mind:
Maintain a schedule to keep you on track with all your homework.
A schedule lets you keep track of your work and provides you with a sense of direction. Simply writing down deadlines can help you find structure on days that otherwise can feel like a blur. This strategy can also make sure that you are not falling behind on your assignments. Overall, it can reduce the likelihood of anxiety and keep your mind organized, even in the drowsy weather.
Continue to maintain a social life to detox from stress.
The cold has a way of keeping us indoors and away from our friends. However, spending time with them is crucial. They are there to remind you that life exists beyond tiring classes and deadlines. Friends are there to provide you with emotional support and help you recharge after an exhausting day. So, try to get out there to either grab brunch or a movie with your buddies.
Most importantly, always make sure to take care of yourself.
Keeping yourself healthy in the cold weather is the most important step in beating seasonal depression. The cold can drain your energy. Eating nutritious meals and staying hydrated can help you fight off exhaustion and avoid illnesses. These small acts can keep your mind focused and your body energized, making it much easier to stay motivated.
Winter may feel endless for now, but one must remember that it isn’t forever. These months are less about pushing yourself to the limit and more about how to navigate gently through the winter blues. With a touch of self-regulation and by reserving a little more compassion for yourself, even the harshest days can become manageable. Before you know it, the winds will soften, and spring is here.
