Hollywood Glam: A Preview of BU's Biggest Night for Fashion

Whoever said, “all that glitters isn’t gold” must have been familiar with the opulence of Old Hollywood, a time when just about everything sparkled—glitter, sequins and jewels galore.

And so sets the tone of Hollywood Glam, this semester’s rendition of Boston University’s Fashion and Retail Association’s biannual fashion show. Over 250 guests are expected to fill Metcalf Hall to watch 12 student designers and 18 student models show their prowess on the runway tonight, April 15.

Returning to what FAB president Sarah Buechler calls “fashion roots,” the show will showcase classic Hollywood glamour, from the catwalk decorations to the clothes. But just what should spectators expect?

“Think fur, pearls and sparkles,” said Buechler.

There will also be acapella performances, jazz music and two featured lines from Mint Julep and Ministry of Supply.

As for the talented BU students among us, some designers are returning for their second, third or even fourth time on the FAB runway, each with their own take on what ‘Hollywood Glam’ means.

Cassidy Randall (COM ’18), FAB’s social media and marketing director, serves as this year’s head designer, prepping for the show by supervising, assisting and coordinating the designers and models. Randall will also be presenting a collection that features “airy” pieces, including a meticulously detailed pink and grey pleated skirt that she would wear on a night out.

She described the theme as “fun and versatile,” something she thinks clearly shows in the array of lines that will be showcased.

“With this group of designers we have an intense variety of styles,” said Randall. “Everything from bomber jackets to tutus, which will definitely be fun for the audience.”

Socheata Huy (Questrom ’17) is presenting her fourth collection for the club, using “sequins, black and gold elements” to stick to the theme, including her favorite piece, a gold sequined crop top. Dheandra Jack (CAS ’16), who has modeled for the past two shows, is making her design debut with an all white line that includes a faux fur skirt. Madeline Swan’s (CAS ’17) line will feature a range of corsets, showing off her tens years of sewing experience.

Having been heavily involved in FAB since her freshman year, Zahra Shivji (COM ’17) is no stranger to the runway and will be presenting her fifth collection with FAB. In addition to designing for the shows, Shivji has served as FAB’s director of PR and marketing, helping to put further establish the club by tripling sponsorship engagement. She currently serves as FAB’s Vice President.

Shivji’s designs serve a special purpose—a preview of what’s to come. The looks Shivji will debut at Hollywood Glam are a sneak peak of her own company, MariamZ, which will be launching this summer. Shivji specializes in capes, her favorite of which is a one adorned with gold embellishments.

“Mariam Z’s inspiration stems from statement couture for the everyday woman,” said Shivji. “We want to be able to create statement pieces over that LBD, or distressed jeans.”

With the gift bags packed, the catwalk set and the designers and models rearing to go, FAB’s Hollywood Glam Fashion Show will be a spectacular to remember for fashion-lovers across campus.

Be sure not to miss out. Doors at Metcalf Hall in the GSU will open at 7 p.m. and the show starts at 8 p.m. There will be raffle prizes and giveaways. General admission tickets are available on Eventbrite for $10 a piece.
