For your friend who misses Community…
AP Bio follows Jack (Glenn Howerton from It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia), a “philosophy scholar” who is denied a professor position at an Ivy League university. As a result, he gets a job teaching AP Biology where he enlists his high school students in a scheme to win “what is rightfully his.” The series is written by Mike O’Brien (a former SNL writer) and produced by Lorne Michaels and Seth Meyers (also from SNL). Catch AP Bio in its premiere this fall on NBC.
For your friend who has some issues with JJ Abram’s Star Trek reboots...
Star Trek: Discovery is the latest installment in the franchise, taking place ten years before the events of the original 1960s series. The show stars Sonequa Martin-Green (actress from the famed T.V. series, The Walking Dead) as the First Officer of the USS Shenzhou who must help the rest of her crew navigate an interstellar cold war. The rest of the cast is rounded out with Michelle Yeoh (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), Jason Isaacs (Harry Potter, The OA) and Anthony Rapp (Rent). Discovery is slated to premiere September 24 on CBS All Access, as one of CBS’ originals on its new personal streaming site.
For your friend who loved Parenthood and House...
The Good Doctor, a new show premiering on ABC, is based off of a Korean drama by the same title. The show stars Freddie Highmore (Bates Motel), who plays an autistic pediatric surgeon working amongst fellow surgeons who wonder whether a man who cannot relate to others emotionally can effectively save lives. The cast also includes Richard Schiff (The West Wing) and Hill Harper (CSI:NY and Homeland). The show is produced by the same creators of House as well as Daniel Dae Kim’s (Hawaii 5-0 and Lost) production company, 3AD. Tune in to ABC for the premiere on September 25.
For your friend who secretly wished they became one of the X-Men...
Fox’s collaboration with Marvel, The Gifted, is about two families whose children develop mutant powers. When their neighborhood and the government grow hostile toward the kids, the families escape and join a hidden society of mutants. The series is directed by Bryan Singer, who previously worked on the X-Men franchise, and stars Amy Acker (Person Of Interest) and Sean Teale (Reign), among others. The Gifted premieres October 2 on Fox.
For your friend who unironically enjoys soap operas…
Dynasty is a reboot of the 1980s primetime soap opera of the same name. The storyline follows two wealthy oil tycoon families as they feud over their fortunes–and their children. The series stars Elizabeth Gillies (Victorious), Sam Adegoke (Switched At Birth) and Alan Dale (Once Upon A Time and The OC). Check out the Dynasty premiere October 11 on The CW.
