Whether you prefer to pack for your vacation weeks in advance or cram everything into your case only the night before, it is extremely hard to leave the house without that nagging “I think I’m forgetting something” feeling. These top packing essentials will help you leave that feeling behind as you set off on your next adventure, no matter the destination.

In Your Carry-On

This small bag contains everything you could possibly need access to during the flight. It may even be your sole piece of luggage if you are traveling light. Kept under the seat in front of your or stored in an overhead compartment, the size restrictions limit the amount you can bring on board, so it is important that every item counts.

  1. Boarding pass. You won’t be able to get on the plane without it.

  2. Passport. Although US citizens can travel with any government-issued ID within the US, it is still wise to carry your passport at all times in case of an emergency.

  3. Copy of complete flight itinerary. This is especially useful if you are not taking a direct flight and you have to make complicated connections.

  4. Physical address of where you are staying. You will need this when completing immigration forms upon arrival, in case your luggage is delayed, and to share with cab drivers or input into your Uber app once you leave the airport.

  5. Phone charger. The last thing you want is for your phone to die. If your flight is delayed, you may be without power for longer than planned so it is better to be prepared.

  6. Moisturizer. Airplanes are incredibly dehydrating. Just make sure you don’t exceed the maximum size of liquids.

  7. Water bottle. You don’t want to rely on the small sporadic cups of water offered onboard. Purchase a water bottle once you have passed through security, or bring an empty water bottle from home to fill up.

  8. Valuables. If you are checking a suitcase as well, make sure your most valued items are with you in case your luggage is lost or delayed.

  9. Pen. You will need one to complete immigration forms before you land.

  10. Eye mask and earplugs. Don’t underestimate the role these play in a power nap.
