As deciduous trees begin to line Comm Ave, it’s clear that Fall is officially underway. Many might take this sign as a forewarning to prepare for brutal Boston winters, but this time of year serves as much more than a seasonal precursor. The festivity of Autumn is unparalleled as it transforms daily life with each year’s shifts in temperature and is accessible within our own BU backyard. Here is a condensed list of activities to embrace all that Fall has to offer:

Shopping for Sweater Weather

To account for unpredictable weather, thrifting vendors are within reach for cultivating a staple fall wardrobe. Closer to campus, Goodwill and the Fenway Flea have racks stocked with sweaters, jackets, and footwear that advantage both style and warmth. Alternatively, Timeout Market has a select vintage Market pop-up on October 19th. With only a 15-minute walk from campus, the market is sure to host unique vendors and offer versatile pieces.

Seasonal food and drink

Another way to indulge in the season is through fall flavors. Campus cafes like Pavement and Starbucks have variations of fall-specific drinks. Pumpkin spice lattes, Iced Maple coffee, and cider are a few blends to hone in the season whether while studying or on the go.

Scary Movies

In preparation for Halloween, Coolidge Corner Theater is running horror movie showings throughout the season. The theater is about a six-minute drive from campus but the film experience allows viewers to watch from in-house theaters or even outdoor screenings. Films like “The Craft,” “Rosemary’s Baby,” and the new release “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” are a few of the iconic autumn films available.

Halloween Drag Bingo

Many Fall activities are hosted by BU’s very own Student Activities Office (SAO) at BU Central in the GSU. One in particular is BU’s Halloween Drag Bingo where students can play amongst Boston drag queens. As SAO representative Darren Lo adds, attendees “may [even] have a chance to win some prizes”. The event is “great for friend groups that want to do something together” or “to find new people and create new connections,” they add.

Art and Fall Crafts

For students looking to be creative this season, painting jack-o-lanterns is a simple way to embrace this upcoming Halloween. City Convenience is supplying pumpkins and, while random, could be a special opportunity to socialize and create with others. Grabbing a few pumpkins, art supplies, and friends makes for a memorable experience from the comfort of campus.
