When most people think of Cambridge, the first thing that comes to mind is Harvard and MIT. However, as a self proclaimed food lover, I love taking weekly trips across the river to find the best underrated spots. In my four semesters at BU, I’ve found my most favourite restaurants across the river.

Spot 1: Flour Bakery and Cafe, Massachusetts Avenue

There are many Flour’s in Boston itself, but the Cambridge locations tend to be emptier, making it much easier to find a table. I love spending a day studying here, and this specific location is by far the emptiest one I’ve been to.

My personal favorites are the avocado toast and their iced mocha. Additionally, they have the best ganache in their iced mocha, making it the perfect beverage for a study session. They also have great pastries such as their gluten free brownie.

This spot may be famous because of Shawn Mendes, but it actually deserves the hype!

The pancakes here are mouthwatering and if you go on a weekday, there’s practically no line. The first time I went, there was an open table immediately. I will say, their savoury food is not my favorite, but their sweet food was very enjoyable.

Spot 3: Si Cara, Massachusetts Avenue

An amazing Italian spot if you want a full meal. This restaurant has more than just small bites and coffee. I personally love their pizza and tiramisu; however, I’d love to go back to try some of their other options. They also have a location in South Boston, but I prefer the Cambridge one.

Spot 4: Madras Dosa, Harvard Square

The Greater Boston area isn’t known for the best Indian food, but Madras Dosa definitely leaves me wanting more. I love the homey vibe of this place and all of its buttery dosas. I feel completely at home and really enjoy sitting and people watching there.

Spot 5: Pop Up Bagels, Harvard Square

I love Pop Up Bagels! Their service is incredibly fast, and the bagels are always piping hot. Another bonus to this location is there’s never a line, while the other locations, such as Seaport, tend to be busier.

Plus, Harvard Square is just the perfect place to spend a day! They have weekly schmears which sets Pop Up Bagels apart from any other bagel spots. I’d recommend trying the salt bagel regardless of which schmear you pick.

Spot 6: Bluestone Lane, Harvard Square

This Australian-style restaurant has both a take-away cafe and a sit down area. This spot is a bit hidden and not many people know about it. When I went, I loved their truffle grilled cheese, and thought their coffee was just okay. However, their portions are very big and filling which makes Bluestone Lane a perfect spot for brunch!

In conclusion, while nothing quite compares to Boston, I do recommend crossing the river for some of the best food—with little to no wait. Cambridge is relatively unexplored which makes it perfect to spend a weekend studying or have a chill day with friends!
