Exploring BU Art Galleries

The perfect way to spend an afternoon at BU without spending money

Boston has been so cold and mucky this semester, and I’ve got a feeling we are in for at least a few more weeks of the icy snow and salt-covered sidewalks. So if you are looking for a way to brighten an otherwise dreary winter afternoon, I recommend taking some time to appreciate the art galleries here on campus! There are so many spanning from West Campus to the GSU, and each gallery is perfectly spaced out to break up the windy journey between Central and West Campus.

Mugar Memorial Library (in the GSU):

The corner of the first floor of Mugar is currently filled with an exhibit called Textiles Tell Stories, which is filled with handmade textile prints and clothing from across Africa, including Ethiopia, Ghana, Mauritius, Morocco, and more. The main exhibit features several contributors and showcases textiles worn by members of the BU community. Each piece of clothing is paired with an image of the clothing being worn and a statement about the personal/cultural significance of each outfit. I have visited this exhibit several times and can tell you that pictures simply don’t convey the incredible level of detail found on each piece.

Howard Thurman Center:

When you enter the HTC and walk all the way down the hallway, you’ll notice walls filled with pieces of artwork, which are incredible in themselves. Follow the path, and you’ll find the 808 Gallery, which is currently home to Landscapes Near Me, highlighting the paintings of Richard Raiselis, who depicts the views surrounding Commonwealth Ave. with incredible expertise. The gallery offers ample room to appreciate the large paintings, and I enjoyed taking time to look at each work, finding beauty in the otherwise mundane locations I pass when going back and forth between classes.

College of Fine Arts:

Getting deeper into West Campus, the CFA building offers two exhibits on the first floor of the building. From the sidewalk, you’ll notice the Faye G., Jo, and James Stone Gallery, which recently welcomed a new exhibit titled Labor of Luxury. This is another textile exhibit, curated by Annette Becker, and allows you to come face-to-face with detailed designer clothing. Be sure to head over this week before the exhibit is gone on March 6.

In order to enter this exhibit, you may find yourself walking through the Commonwealth Gallery, which highlights the work of BU visual arts students at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. This gallery offers a range of styles and mediums from a hyper-realistic cake box recreation to abstract wall art to photographic work. My current favorite piece in this gallery was constructed entirely out of oysters. BU students are doing incredible work, and it is certainly worth checking out!
