My BU Club Formula
How to choose clubs that complement your life.
by Layne Sheplee
With over 450 club booths strewn across Nickerson Field, music blaring, and the sun beating, Splash, Boston University's twice-annual club and activities fair, is always a blast. However fun, the school-wide event and club selection as a whole are undoubtedly overwhelming. As a freshman last year, I struggled to navigate the hundreds of clubs and activities at BU and choose ones that fit my interests.
Though it was not without trial and error, with a year at BU and two Splashes under my belt, I’ve found clubs that I love and that complement my life. I’ve compiled a formula to share my wisdom and to help you fill your schedule with clubs that balance out your life:
Club(s) for your wellness
A valuable lesson I learned from my freshman year is that I need to stay active. In the midst of stressful schoolwork and the busy schedule of college life, working out is the way that I promote wellness for my body and mind. This year, I set out to find an exercise-based club and ended up joining the women’s rugby club team, which has been incredibly fun and great for my physical and mental health. After reaping the benefits of an active club, I definitely recommend that all students find a club that promotes wellness in a way that they enjoy.
Club(s) for your major
After taking care of myself, another main priority for my time at BU, and for many students, is to work towards my future. Consequently, clubs related to my major are another essential part of my club formula. As a journalism major, I’ve joined publications and groups like The Buzz and BU Society of Professional Journalists. Not only have I enjoyed being a part of them, but they’ve given me firsthand experience in a career I hope to pursue.
Club(s) for your hobbies/interests
I would not be me without my unique hobbies and interests, just as my formula would not be complete without clubs that foster them. Clubs are a perfect way to step away from the stressors of schoolwork and classes and, instead, nurture passions and interests. I love to read, and joining a book club this semester, Book & Ink, has definitely enriched my life and made me set aside time every week to enjoy my hobby. I think a club that is solely for fun is important for every student.
Though I hope this is a helpful guide for choosing clubs, my biggest piece of advice is to try new things and trust the process, even if it takes some experimenting!
